Uno came to us very thin and with a severely injured eye. Upon examination by our vet, it was discovered that his eye was split in half. The pain that this poor little boy experienced must have been horrible. Uno never fought medications and seemed to know that we were trying to make him better. He underwent surgery to remove what was left of his eye, and he is now recovering nicely. We estimate Uno to be approximately one year old. Life has been really hard for this youngster who deserves so much more. UPDATE: It has been discovered that Uno has a serious heart condition. This is so sad, because Uno has already gone through so much. Uno is responding well to the heart medication, but will need it for the rest of his life. For almost the first three years of his life, Binx was always the talk of the shelter. He quickly greeted all visitors by launching himself onto their shoulders and licking them to say hello. He finds happiness and joy no matter what life seems to throw at him. Sadly, sweet Binx has had many obstacles to over come and it seems so unfair for such a wonderful and loving cat.  He spent most of his life growing up in a shelter before finally finding a wonderful foster home, only now to be facing a life threatening heart condition. With proper medication and follow up care, we can not only make Binx comfortable but also help extend his life. A good Samaritan found a kitten who was obviously injured and brought her to us. She was having a great deal of trouble walking and had obvious injuries. Upon examination by our vet it was determined that Serenity had a broken pelvis. The sweet little girl went on cage rest and began to heal. Poor Serenity spent many weeks of her kitten life in a cage while healing. We set her up in front of a window so she could watch the birds and squirrels during her time of confinement. Through all of this, Serenity was very loving and gentle. She was always full of love and quick to offer head butts and purrs. Because Serenity was outside on her own she did not receive immediate medical care. While her pelvis is now healed, it did not heal correctly and this causes Serenity to have an abnormal gait. Our vet believes that this will improve as she grows stronger but she will probably always have some degree of a limp. Serenity is an absolute sweetheart and is very gentle and loving. The pictures do not do justice to those incredible eyes that seem to see right into your soul. There is something very endearing about this little girl. Poor Sue. He has had a rough start to his life. First came his name - the people who turned him in said he was a girl, so he was named appropriately. When he was examined - surprise! A boy named Sue! Then he developed asthma, which is made worse by dust and dander. Being in the humane society is not the best place for him to avoid these things. Odd was found laying on a sidewalk in horrible condition. He was a tiny puppy with many problems. He was severely dehydrated, skin and bones, and in such poor health that no one thought he would survive. Odd had lots of inner strength and fought against all of his infirmities. Today Odd is visually impaired and has some issues with his hips. He doesn't know that he's different. Talk about a happy boy! Odd brings a smile to the face of everyone who meets him. How many obstacles can one dog face?

Sawyer was found in Eastern KY on I-64 unable to move to safety because of two broken legs. He had a respiratory infection, was malnourished and flea infested. He has shown definite signs of being physically abused. In the last 3 months, he has undergone 4 surgeries to place pins, plates and screws to save both of his legs. He has also suffered from bladder stones, skin/bone infections and pressure sores/lick granulomas.

Despite all of the medical problems and complications, Sawyer and the Shelby County Humane Society have not given up. He is receiving physical therapy and learning to use his legs again. Little Spencer was found all alone and abandoned by his mother. He was approximately 4 weeks old and in very poor health. The kind lady who found him took him straight to a Humane Society employee so he could receive treatment. Poor little Spencer was hungry, flea infested, and the
tip of his tail had suffered some trauma. The little guy had lots of spunk and survived his ordeal. This little bitty cutie pie is a feral kitty with serious inner ear issues. KT has lived with us for several years and cannot be released back to a farm, due to her ear problems. She has recurring ear infections that have to be treated medically. KT Roams in her open cat room and hangs out on her open air porch and is a pretty happy girl. Because of the constant infections, she has a permanent head tilt, but it only makes her cuter. She is constantly monitored, so we can medicate her when needed. Poor, sweet Maxine was found abandoned in a carrier under a van in the shelter parking lot. She looked absolutely awful when she came in, and we had hopes that a good cleaning, lots of food and love would help this flame point siamese shine. We were very sad to discover that Maxine has cancer of the tongue and it will probably spread further through her body in the near future. For now, Maxine eats lots of soft food and has gained a healthy amount of weight. She is spunky, loving and very demanding for her breakfast!
